QUOTATION: Life is a Mystery

Benedict J. Groeschel
Life itself is mysterious, and those who fail to come to grips with mystery are either very naïve or very angry or end up being both. Many of the attacks on religion, which as we mentioned, are in the popular press at the present time, are ultimately based on a refusal to come to grips with mystery.

QUOTATION: Sins

Fr. Benedict Groeschel
The sins against sex are the most humiliating, but the sins against charity are the most damning.

QUOTATION: Hurt

Benedict Groeschel
You must expect that these poor sinners in the Church are going to get hurt and that they are going to hurt each other. To be let down by the Church is not a reason to leave her, any more than to be let down by your family is a reason to give up family life and move to a desert island. Are there any who have not been hurt by members of their family? In his ‘City of God’, St. Augustine wisely observed that it breaks the heart of any good person to see that even in one’s own home one is not in a safe place and that one may be attacked even there by an enemy posing as a friend or even by an enemy who used to be a loved one. If we all gave up on the human race because we have been hurt, we’d have to move to separate planets.

QUOTATION: Suffering

Fr. Benedict Groeschel
You have to be careful with suffering. One has to be careful not to enjoy it, or focus on it, or expand it too much. Then suffering becomes the goal. The goal is not suffering; the goal is loving patience, offered to God as best one can. And the humility to admit that we don’t do this very well. One of the things I learned from my illness is that over and over again we have to tell God that we really trust Him. Trusting in God is not one action; it’s an ongoing way of life.

QUOTATION: Untried

One thing that is not being tried in any particularly enthusiastic way by people who call themselves Catholic is Catholicism. -

QUOTATION: Those who have no rights

There are two groups of people who have no rights...the unborn and the priests.
